Divine will is one of the important theological issues that is closely related to such concepts as command, love, decree, creation, and divine knowledge. This study examines the relationship among these concepts in Qūt al-Qulūb by Abū Ṭālib al-Makkī and Sharḥ al-Taʿarruf by Mustamlī Bukhārī, employing a descriptive-analytical method. Given that the ultimate aim of Sufism is the effacement of human will in the Divine Will, one might expect Sufis to regard all events and phenomena in the world as resulting from God’s will while simultaneously avoiding determinism, which could lead to negligence in fulfilling the obligations of servitude. Both authors hold theological positions broadly consistent with those of the Sunnī tradition and, in particular, the Ashʿarites. They regard divine will as necessarily corresponding to the occurrence of an act, while the absence of divine will corresponds to its non-occurrence. In their view, God’s will may be directed toward the commission of sins or the abandonment of obligatory acts, and such will is consistent with His pre-eternal knowledge; however, divine command, prohibition, satisfaction, and love do not necessarily correspond to His will and pre-eternal knowledge. Neither author regards love and satisfaction as objects of divine will, and in this respect they do not concur with Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī. In their view, God’s willing an act that is contrary to His command does not entail determinism, because the criterion of obedience and disobedience is conformity or nonconformity to the divine command, rather than conformity to divine will. Moreover, God wills the occurrence of an act in accordance with His pre-eternal knowledge and therefore possesses prior knowledge of the state of the morally responsible person and whether that person will obey or disobey.
